Weightlifter Azroy Hazal Wafie Izhar Ahmad bagged Malaysia’s first gold medal on the opening day of the 2018 Commonwealth Games!
The games officially kicked off two days ago on 4 April, in Gold Coast, Australia. A total of 175 Malaysian athletes, of whom comprised of 99 men and 76 women, are representing Malaysia in 16 different events.
Azroy, 24, who hails from Pahang, broke the Commonwealth Games record and won the men’s 56kg weightlifting title when he lifted a total of 261kg, beating India’s Gururaja by 12kg more.
At the same time, he also broke two other records set by his idol and coach Amirul Hamizan. The first was the 260kg record which had won Amirul Hamizan the gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England; and the second was an eight-year record, which Amirul Hamizan set by registering 117kg in the 2010 Games in New Delhi.
No one could have given Azroy a better gold medal birthday gift than himself—he celebrated his 24th birthday on 4 April too.
The Commonwealth Games will come to an end on 15 April.
