Last October, New Straits Times reported that Malaysia records around 700 deaths by drowning every year. Of these, 500 are children between the ages of 1 and 18 years.
In order to cut down these statistics, the National Union of the Teaching Profession has proposed recently that swimming lessons be made mandatory for school students.
The Malaysian Civil Defense Department has stated that it’s ready to supply instructors should swimming lessons be made compulsory for students. That being said, at present, this is merely a proposal and there’s no word yet on whether it’ll be made official.
