Last year, Proton was sold to China’s vehicle company Geely with a 49.9% stake. The move drew many mixed reactions from Malaysians, especially Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed… which is understandable since Proton was basically his baby.

But during the 24th Nikkei Conference in Tokyo on Monday (11 June), our Prime Minister announced that the government is now planning to start another national car project.
According to the New Straits Times, the company will perhaps be in partnership with other countries in the Southeast region. Our government is looking at Japan, South Korea and Thailand as potential partners based on their expertise in manufacturing automobiles.
