Originally known as the “Nobel Prize for Cancer Research,” UK-based Malaysian scientist, Prof Dr Serena Nik-Zainal – who is the principal investigator in the research; was awarded the prize for her work on cancer genome interpretation in collaboration with Dr Paul Calleja and Dr Ignacio Medina from the University of Cambridge.

Dr Serena is part of the University of Cambridge’s Medical Genetics Department and Medical Research Council Cancer Unit.

The award will be presented to the scientists in a ceremony at the University of Bern in Switzerland on Friday (18th October) where Dr Serena will present her work under the title “Accelerating holistic cancer genome interpretation towards the clinic.”

According to the university, Dr Serena’s research work “allows for the mutations in cancer tumours to be analysed using new bio-informatic methods, which in turn enabled new approaches to targeted therapies.”

This research led to the successful application that enabled the acceleration of holistic cancer genome interpretation towards clinical practice.

Dr Serena notes that “the rate-limiting step in cancer genomics today is not the ability to perform sequencing. It is the expertise in performing downstream analysis and making a clinically-useful interpretation.”

According to the scientist, this remains the biggest hurdle between genomic technology and the clinical context.

Congratulations once again to Dr Serena and her team on the achievement! We’re super proud of her work in cancer research!
