Keeping up with the latest trends in fashion, electronic gadgets and living a life beyond their means have taken a toll on the youth of Malaysia. Around 64,632 Malaysians aged 18 to 44 years old have been declared bankrupt over the last half a decade!
The government was concerned over the situation, which could be attributed to poor financial planning and insufficient knowledge to manage financial matters.
“The government, via the Insolvency Department, is committed to carrying out awareness programs regarding bankruptcy to the people and via its outreach programs with other government ministries, agencies and bodies,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said. One of the ways is through reduce financial illiteracy through initiatives and awareness campaigns by the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) which is under Bank Negara Malaysia.
