If you’ve been on the internet recently, you would have heard about how over 100 Taiwanese residents legally changed their name to “salmon” to be able to participate in a restaurant’s free food promotion.

One man however didn’t realise that his name change would be permanent and now, his forever name will be “Salmon Dream”.

Popular sushi chain Akindo Sushiro, recently unveiled their latest promotion that offered individuals with the word “salmon” in their name, a free meal for them and their entire table.

To take advantage of the two-day promotion, over 150 people rushed to their closest household registration offices to legally change their names and even got printed identification cards with their new names.

Joining in on the salmon craze was a student surnamed Chang, from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at China Medical University, who legally changed his name to “Chang Salmon Dream”.

Though Chang may have enjoyed the sushi restaurant’s free meal promotion with his unique name, he was faced with a nightmare when he found out that he couldn’t change his name back.

According to Taiwan’s household registration office, an individual is only allowed to legally change their names a maximum of three times.

Chang however has maxed out his quota.

The household registration office informed him that he had reached his quota and was not allowed to change his name again.

When Chang realised that he was stuck with “Salmon Dream” for a name, he was horrified. Not only did he change his name for a food promotion, the student had failed to first notify his parents before doing so. Yikes.

The household registration office in Taichung shared that a total of 46 people had changed their name to “Salmon” for the promotion.

Chang, who changed his name on the last day of the sushi promotion, said that he felt remorse when he entered the restaurant to get his free meal.

“Everybody was changing their names, so I did it too, but it was totally not worth it,” he said.

When he thought about the long-term repercussions of having “Salmon Dream” as a legal name, Chang was almost in tears. He shared that he isn’t sure how he’ll introduce himself to others in the future and how he’ll finally break the news to his parents.

We definitely wouldn’t want to be in Chang Salmon Dream’s position now…

We’re sending moral support to Chang for when he finally tells his new name… He’ll definitely need it.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for free food? Let us know!
