We’re not shy to admit that we’re probably one of the biggest fans of sleep out there. No matter the time or place, we’re down for a nap or a sleep.

But there is such a thing as too much sleep…

Due to a rare medical condition, one man spends 300 days a year asleep, and even we know that’s… too much sleep.

Purkharam, a 42-year-old man from a village in Rajasthan, India, has recently been gaining a lot of attention for his extreme rare condition that causes him to sleep for 300 days a year.

The resident of Bhadwa village, was diagnosed with Axis Hypersomnia 23 years ago, and the condition causes him to sleep for long stretches of time that can last up to 25 days.

When the man was first diagnosed, he slept for about 15 hours at a time, but as time went on, his symptoms gradually got worse and by 2015, his family started counting his sleep schedule in days instead of hours.

The small shop owner went from sleeping for more than seven or eight days at a time, to now sleeping for up to 25 days straight.

Out of 365 days, Purkharam spends roughly 300 days sleeping.

Due to his condition, the 42-year-old who runs a local shop in his home village, is only able to operate it for just five days a month. He sometimes ends up falling asleep at work and unfortunately, once he’s asleep, he’s unable to wake up.

All his family can do when this occurs is to take him home, feed and even bathe him while he sleeps.

Speaking to Republic World, Purkharam’s wife, Lichmi Devi shared that once, the man woke up on a Sunday after sleeping for 12 days straight and immediately opened his shop.

Because of his hypersomnia, no one knows how long he’ll be able to operate his shop before succumbing to sleep again.

Axis Hypersomnia is a chronic neurological sleep disorder that leads to daytime sleepiness and/or long sleep hours – more than nine to 10 hours in 24 hours.

A study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) shared that hypersomnia affects four to six per cent of the population, with an impact on the everyday life of the patient.

Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for the rare condition, though Purkharam has tried various treatments over the years for his extreme case.

With the treatments, the man has suffered from side effects like severe headaches and fatigue but his family is confident that Purkharam will recover and lead a normal life once again.

Though we love our sleep, we can imagine spending 300 days out of a year sleeping…

We hope Purkharam will be able to recover fully one day!

What’s the longest you’ve spent sleeping? Let us know!
