It’s safe to say that those of us who watch The Walking Dead were devastated when we no longer had Steven Yeun’s Glenn Rhee gracing our screens after his brutal murder on the series.
However, life did not stop for the actor as he went on to bigger roles and one of them has him making history by becoming the first Asian American to be nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars!

This year’s Oscar Awards nominations were finally announced yesterday and cheers were heard all over the internet when Steven was nominated in the Best Actor category.
The actor earned his nomination for his role in Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari that also received a nomination for Best Picture.
Previously, Steven was also nominated in the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critic’s Choice Awards for the same role but it is his Oscar nomination that is making waves as the actor makes history as the first Asian American actor to be nominated in the Best Actor category.

Born in South Korea and raised in the United States, Steven discussed the prospect of an Oscar nomination with Variety in December and admitted that the notion of being an Oscar nominee was a “hard one” for him.
“As great as it would be to set a precedent or be part of a moment that breaks through a ceiling, I personally don’t want to be ensnared by that moment, either,” he explained. “The truth that I’m trying to understand for myself is who I am, individually.”
“I’m happy to serve a larger moment for the community,” the actor continued. “And I’m happy to push narratives and show who we are because I am that, too. I am an Asian American and the pride I have for that is immense.”
“But also, for me, it’s really about carrying my space and myself through this life and making sure that I tell it true from my perspective,” he added. “But it would be awesome, and I hope that we can have many more of those and that it won’t be an issue moving forward.”

Steven will be up against some big contenders in the Best Actor category at the Oscars. His role in Minari will be up against Chadwick Boseman in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal, Anthony Hopkins in The Father, and Gary Oldman in Mank.
With first-time nominee Riz Ahmed, who is a Brit of Pakistani descent, also in the running for the award, this marks the first time in Oscars history that two men of Asian heritage are up for best actor.
