The Miss Universe pageant just took place and while Malaysians have been celebrating our supposed win in the Best National Costume category, unfortunately, we’ve got some bad news for you…

A couple of hours ago, it was announced that the Peranakan-themed costume worn by Miss Malaysia, Shweta Sekhon, had been judged the best in the preliminary national costume contest.
While the announcement was being made by host Steve Harvey, there was a bit of mix up that happened that caused a lot of confusion amongst those watching.
Steve - who’s been known to make mistakes especially when it comes to announcing pageant winners; was blamed for “mistakenly” stating that Miss Philippines was the one who had won Best National Costume, with Miss Malaysia standing next to him.
“Earlier this week, all the contestants competed in a National Costume contest,” he said. “Here’s the look at the winner, Miss Philippines…”
Miss Malaysia corrected him by saying, “It’s not Philippines. It’s Malaysia.”

Malaysians all around were singing praises for winning in this category for the first time, but unfortunately the national costume sash was not ours to win.
In a new announcement from the Miss Universe 2019 pageant, it was revealed that it is actually Miss Philippines – Gazini Ganados, that had won for Best National Costume.
Well, unfortunately we didn’t win this time around but we’re still super proud of Shweta for bringing our national pride to the Miss Universe pageant!
Who do you think should have ultimately won the National costume contest? Let us know!
