If you're someone who prefers staying up late and sleeping in, we've got some good news for you! A new study has shown that these qualities may be a sign of high intelligence and a more comfortable lifestyle.

The University of Southampton recently conducted a study titled "Why night owls are more intelligent" that indicates a link between sleeping in and creativity, intelligence and an independent spirit.

Business Insider reported that the university studied the sleeping patterns of 1,229 men and women. They discovered that the night owls, who usually go to bed after 11pm and wake up after 8am, tended to have a higher income and a more comfortable lifestyle in general.

The study's authors, Satoshi Kanazawa and Kaja Perina, argue that humans are better adapted to living and sleeping like they did in the olden days—which means sleeping early and waking up early.

But that was a time before the internet was created. That means no wi-fi, no smartphones, no binging on TV series, no playing games and all the things we're used to doing now. Nowadays, people generally stay up socialising till much later but still get up early for their daily routines.

If the snooze button is your best friend, you're not alone.

The study shows that those of us who hit the snooze button are adapting to a new modern lifestyle. This is where your intelligence levels play a part. The authors claim that being particularly adaptable to modern life is a sign of outstanding intelligence.

To put it in simpler terms, "It takes a smart person to deal with the snooze button because it is a very recent invention that evolution itself has done nothing to prepare us for," Business Insider reported.

Satoshi and Kaja believe that "If we learn to listen to our own body's needs and not to the hard and fast rules of our clocks, we are more likely to pursue our own passions and find our own solutions to problems. This makes us more creative and independent."

But that doesn't mean that we should waste all our time sleeping. While the study shows that night owls are happier and smarter, there are still significant risk factors associated with staying in bed too long. People who spend 12 or more hours in bed have been shown to have a significantly higher risk of untimely death.

Confused? Here's the easiest way to explain what this means.

If you're going to bed a little later, don't be afraid to hit that snooze button! Listen to your body and its needs.

But if you do need the extra bit of help to wake up in the morning, this awesome pressure sensitive alarm clock will definitely get you out of bed! The alarm won't turn off until you're up and applying pressure onto the rug!
