If you’ve been living in Kuala Lumpur over the past year and noticed an influx of tourists around, you’re not the only one.
According to a new survey, KL was listed as the sixth most visited city in the world in 2018!

Mastercard’s annual Global Destination Cities Index was released recently and Malaysians can rejoice to find that KL is in the top 10.
The index ranks 200 cities based on “proprietary analysis of publicly available visitor volume and spend data.”
Since 2009, the number of international overnight visitors around the world grew by an astonishing 76%.
The survey revealed that in 2018 alone, KL received 13.79 million overnight visitors!

Bangkok, Thailand topped the list once again this time around with over 22 million visitors. Paris came in second place with 19.10 million visitors while London came in third with 19.09 million overnight visitors.
“In today’s interconnected world, travel has become an important part of how we work and how we live,” said Carlos Menendez, president of Enterprise Partnerships. “It’s critical for us to understand how travel impacts cities and destinations for the better and the challenges it poses, to ensure local leaders have the information and solutions they need to succeed.

The index also ranked the cities around the world based on how many nights were spent by overnight visitors on average. KL came in at number five with the average of nights clocking in at 5.7 nights.
According to the index, the forecast for 2019 sees an across-the-board growth, with Tokyo expecting the largest increase in visitors.
