Plastic, plastic, plastic.
We’ve been talking about the dangers of plastic waste for years now. But have you completely cut plastic out of your life yet? Most Malaysians will answer that question with an unfortunate “no”.
Well, you might not be saying “no” a year from now because our government is working to introduce a nationwide ban on plastic bags within one year.
Currently, even though similar bans are being implemented in Putrajaya, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Melaka, many Malaysians don’t understand WHY plastic bags are bad. And their lack of awareness is the reason why the bans haven’t been working. Malaysians just simply pay the extra 20 cents to get a plastic bag!
The government is going to look into holding public engagements and educational programmes to raise awareness on the ban of plastic bags.
In April, the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association said that on average, every Malaysian throws away 300 plastic bags a year. Wah! That’s a lot of plastic!
