The King of Malaysia has a funny bone in him. Earlier today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V commenced the session in the Dewan Rakyat by cracking a joke that tickled the newly-minted lawmakers.
“Ahli-ahli yang berhormat, sila duduk dan jangan lari (Respected members, please sit down and don’t run),” said the Agong just as he was about to sit down to give his Royal Address at the opening of the 14thParliament.
His joke was followed by a trail of laughter and smiles from all members of the Parliaments regardless of party and coalition, where a faint “Daulat Tuanku” (Long live the King) was also heard.
Barisan Nasional and PAS lawmakers staged a walkout recently during the swearing in of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker, Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof. Their justification is that the process of appointing the Speaker wasn’t done in accordance with the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders. Only two members of the Opposition didn’t join in on the walkout, namely Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin and Kimanis MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.
