With so many SOPs coming out under the ongoing CMCO, it might be confusing to understand what is allowed and what is not.

We’re here to help you clear up one part of the confusion.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob clarified today in his live press conference that a passenger is allowed to sit next to the driver in vehicles.

The clarification comes after a video went viral on social media that showed a driver getting fined supposedly for having his wife sit next to him in the car.

According to the Senior Minister, the information from the video is false and in fact, the driver had received a fine because he was using his phone while driving.

“Yesterday, I saw a viral video that showed a driver being fined for having his wife in the front passenger seat,” the Senior Minister shared. “I have answered this question multiple times, there is no fixed seating for passengers in a car.”

“When I saw the viral video, I contacted the chief police officer in Bukit Aman to clarify why the driver was fined and I was told that person who took the video deliberately did so in a way to slander the police’s reputation,” he continued.

“In fact, the driver was not fined for having his wife next to him, rather he was fined for using his handphone while driving,” he clarified.

While there is no fixed rule on who sits where in a car, please remember that only TWO people are allowed in a car at this time and having more people in car will get you fined.

Please stay safe, stay home and be sure to follow all the SOPs that have been put in place for all our safety.
