In a new bid to help save the environment a little more, the Penang government has urged businesses in the state to cease dispensing plastic bags on Mondays beginning 1st July.
10 years ago, the state government imposed a statewide ban on plastic bags and has now decided to expand the initiative by refusing to provide plastic bags for shoppers, even if they are willing to pay 20 sen for it.

According to State Environment Committee chairman, Phee Boon Poh, the new move will take place every Monday and operators of fixed premises such as hypermarkets, pharmacies, convenience and department stores; are asked to stop providing plastic bags to shoppers.
The chairman noted that the new initiative would be made on a voluntary basis.
“We do not want them to do it just because it is a policy,” he said. “We want them to know that the environment belongs to everyone and we should love the environment by not using plastic bags.”
“My office will prepare the posters for these operators to encourage consumers to voluntarily stop using plastic bags,” he added.
