If you’ve been living on the internet, you’ll know that we’ve had some iconic memes that have stood the test of time.

One of these iconic memes of course is the Mordor meme aka the “One does not…” meme.

As was announced last week, Frozen’s Josh Gad managed to bring back together one of the most beloved cast of all time for his Reunited Apart series on YouTube.

The actor didn’t have to go to Middle-Earth for this reunion though as the Lord of the Rings cast were able to reunite virtually for this very special occasion that aims to help raise funds for No Kids Hungry.

A majority of the trilogy’s cast made their appearance including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Sir Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Andy Serkis, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, director Peter Jackson and more!

During the reunion, the cast went through some of their best moments on the trilogy and even went in-depth with some scenes. Easy to say, they kept us laughing (and a little teary-eyed) throughout the reunion!

We’ll let you watch the full reunion on your own:

One of the best parts of the reunion that we have to talk about, of course has to be the origin of the Mordor meme.

During the episode, the director talked about the famous Mordor speech that was made by Sean Bean’s Boromir during the formation of the Fellowship.

“One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The Great Eye is ever watchful.”

We’re sure you know the line. It’s the one that launched a million “One Does Not…” memes.

But how did Sean give us that iconic line with so much conviction? Peter Jackson took the time to tell us.

“That entire speech that Sean had to deliver at the Council of Elrond was written the night before,” the director explained. “It’s long and we gave it to Sean the morning he arrived.”

“What Sean did, which I thought was really clever, is he got a print-out of the speech taped to his knee,” Peter said.

“It was on his knee and when he did that scent, you’ll see [Peter mimes Sean looking down, pretending to be deep in thought].”

“If you watch the scene now, you’ll see every time that Sean has to check his script,” the director added.

Well, at least we now know the origins of one of the best memes!

It’s nice to know that even professional actors need a little help and a little tape to stick their scripts on their knees!

For now, we’ll just keep rewatching the LotR reunion and cry happy tears while we do so!

Did you think that the Mordor meme would have such a fun origin story? Did you love the Lord of the Rings reunion as much as us? Let us know!
