On the 18 November, Dr Cathy Fernandes from King’s College London gives an overview of the most recent, world-leading research on how genes shape our behaviour, and how nature and nurture contribute to the development of behavioural disorders in 'How much do genes influence our personality and behaviour?’ seminar. This free seminar will also include a discussion on the various opportunities to study in this area of psychology in the UK, and what career opportunities are available after graduating.
Dr Fernandes heads a group investigating the contribution of environment and molecular mechanisms to a range of neurodevelopmental (schizophrenia, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder and autism), and psychiatric disorders (anxiety, depression). She also looks into the interaction of genes with environment using environmental models such as prenatal stress (maternal obesity), early life stress (maternal separation), chronic stress (unpredictable chronic mild stress), and drug exposure (cannabis) in her research.
'How much do genes influence our personality and behaviour?’ seminar will be held at Hall 1 (Seminar Room 2) at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 1.30pm to 2.15pm.
Then, on the 19 November, experience a taster lecture that explores a core area of individual difference in psychology, touching on psychological definitions and perspectives of ‘intelligence’ both historical and current, different ways in which we can conceptualise cognitive abilities and creativity, and more in ‘Intelligence and is it inherited?’ by Dr Julie Evans from University College London.
Dr Evans has a background in psychology specifically in individual differences and abnormal psychology, and has 25 years of experience educating university students from undergraduates to postgraduate research students. She holds a 1st class degree in Psychology from Swansea University and a PhD from the University of Oxford, and has been awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in the UK, and two Provost Teaching awards in recognition for an outstanding contribution to teaching and learning at UCL.
