Rojak Daily and the Malaysia Book of Records are working together to officially certify Malaysia’s fastest rapper!

According to Rojak Daily, “the idea came about sometime last year as a follow up to Rojak Daily’s Showdown series.”

“Countless meetings and discussions were held, ideas were thrown around and some thrown away, heated debates took place, many people were consulted for advice and recommendations and now here we are with the search finally kicking off,” they said.

So how exactly will the fastest rapper be judged? Through their rap speed of course!

For those of you thinking of joining the special season of Showdown, here’s some information you would probably need.

“Rap speed is typically calculated as the number of syllables delivered over a period of time – usually calculated down to Syllables Per Second (sps). This however, does not take into consideration a song’s tempo (bpm), or metre, which greatly affects the way the rapper performs.”

Measurement Units:

sps = syllables per second
spBar = syllables per bar
spBeat = syllables per beat
BPM = beats per minute
Metre = beats per bar

Formula:
spBar / (metre)
= SpBeat
 spBeat * (BPM / 60secs)
= sps

Score:
Average sps of 3 fastest bars.

Here’s some examples of local hip hop tracks that were calculated so that you have a bit of an idea of how fast you need to go.

Tempo: 126 bpm
Metre: 4/4
Fastest bars: 16, 16, & 15 spBar
Score: 8.22 sps

Tempo: 163 bpm
Metre: 8/8
Fastest bars: 16, 16, & 14 spBar
Score: 5.21 sps

Tempo: 96 bpm
Metre: 4/4
Fastest bars: 17, 17, & 16 spBar
Score: 6.67 sps

To take part in the competition, you’ll have to upload a short video of you rapping on Instagram. Tag @rojakdaily and don’t forget to include #SHOWDOWNFASTESTRAPPER in your caption too!
