Shen Xinyi, who studies corpse antisepsis and cosmetics at Changsha Social Work College in the central province of Hunan sees a career in her choice of study. “I don’t regard bodies as dreadful, because my father was a mortician and I saw many of them when I was younger,” she said.
During her internships, she cleans, dresses and apply makeup to corpses. This is to ensure that the deceased person looks presentable when relatives and loved ones come to pay their last respects.

Sun Ruirui, 22, another student, reveals she still has concerns about telling her friends about her college major, although her parents are supportive of her choice. “When my friends ask, I usually tell them I am studying how to host wedding ceremonies, but, in fact, I host funerals,” she said.
Xiang Xu, 21, on the other hand, studies cemetery design and funeral culture. “If people are biased, I tell them I study design, but if they aren’t, I tell them everything,” he said.

To assist the first-year students with their future career opportunities and overcome any doubts they may have, teachers at the college often emphasise on the value of the work. “Funeral services are not just about bodies. Through our jobs we can interpret the life of the deceased person and illustrate how unique they were. Only those with a loving heart can successfully serve the families of the deceased,” Xiong, the professor, said.
More than 800 students are at that college taking up funeral-related courses, and about 300 graduate each year! Wanna join them?
