With Game of Thrones coming to an end in the next season, all attention has been focused on the upcoming prequel series.

Although information about the prequel has mostly been kept under wraps, fans of GoT will be glad for this piece of information. Naomi Watts has signed on to play the lead!

The Oscar-nominated actress will be playing "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret" in the pilot from screenwriter, Jane Goldman. Co-created by George RR Martin, the prequel is one of five Game of Thrones projects currently in the works at HBO.

The untitled prequel will take place thousands of years before the events in Game of Thrones and "will chronicle the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour."

"Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend - it's not the story we think we know," an official logline from the network.

Speaking to Digital Spy last year, the screenwriter hinted that her series will definitely include gore and a dash of humour. Jane said, "Those are things I love, and things I like to do. It would be remiss of me not to put them in."

Fans should note that we will not be seeing Naomi or the prequel series until after Game of Thrones completes its run in 2019. The upcoming prequel has been described as "six one-hour movies."

Do you think Naomi Watts is a great addition to the world of Westeros?
