Instead of heading back to New Zealand where the original trilogy was shot, majority of filming for the upcoming series will take place in Scotland.
The Lord of the Rings series is set to begin production in August and will be a prequel to the events that took place in the trilogy. The armies of Mordor, Gondon and Rohan will be resurrected along with a whole new cast of characters and adventures.

Production will be taking place at the studios in Leith, Edinburgh and so far, only two showrunners, Patrick Mckay and John D. Payne; have officially been hired for the series. The upcoming series will be released sometime in 2021.
Not much is known about the plot except that the series will be set during the Second Age of Middle-Earth and will focus on the island of Númenor.
The Lord of the Rings series has also been announced to be the most expensive series in the history of television – even more than Game of Thrones!
