Eugene the egg has cracked under all the attention it’s been getting.
Ever since the world record egg appeared on Instagram, people have had questions. Questions like who’s behind the egg and was there another purpose to the egg besides just achieving “most liked” status?
These questions finally have an answer, and it’s a good one.
When Eugene first appeared, it took nine days for the post to beat Kylie Jenner’s record of most liked picture on Instagram. The post currently has 52.4 million likes.
After a series of posts with the egg in different stages of being cracked, the egg has finally hatched!

A video of the reveal was posted with an important message about mental health in it. The post was captioned: “Phew! I feel so much better now. If you’re feeling the pressure, visit talkingegg.info to find out more. Let’s build this list together.”
You gotta admit, that’s a brilliant marketing strategy.
And who’s behind this brilliant marketing strategy? Chris Godfrey, a 29-year-old advertising creative living in London.
After weeks of wondering who the mastermind was, Chris revealed himself to The New York Times. The advertising creative was inspired to create the egg after learning about Kylie’s record.
“An egg has no gender, race or religion,” he said. “And egg is an egg, it’s universal. Could something as universal and simple as an egg be great enough to beat that record?”
Chris then teamed up with his friends, Alissa Khan-Whelan and C.J. Brown to create Instagram’s current most-liked picture.
Speaking to The New York Times, Alissa said, “People have fallen in love with this egg, and Eugene the egg wants to continue to spread positive messages.”
According to the publication, the trio behind the egg have received several offers. However, they’re just focused on spreading positivity.
“It’s not really about me,” Chris said. “It’s just about the egg and sort of where we can take it and what we can do with it.”
