Durian may be dubbed the king of fruits, but, ask any durian lover, and they’ll tell you know that Musang King is the only king of all durians!
Despite its price, true lovers of durian are willing to fork out the cash for one, and cunning sellers are always ever ready to deceive unsuspecting customers by claiming a regular durian as Musang King, and then charging the high price it commands.
But, there’s a solution to that! Here are a few tips on how to identify the Musang King durian!
- The shape of the husk
A Musang King durian has a bean shape (it looks like a kidney). IT’S NOT PERFECTLY ROUND.

- The colour of the husk
Musang King’s colour is slightly different than that of regular durians. It has a dusty, greyish colour to it. Some even have yellowish-brown husks. The thorns also have a different colour across the tip and the base.

- The density and shape of the spikes
The spikes on the Musang King are blunt and are spaced far apart from each other.

- The crown
The crown of the Musang King is smooth and bald unlike regular durians. You will also notice a gap between the crown and where the spikes begin.

- The seam
If you look closely, the seam of the Musang King looks like a five-arm starfish at the bottom of the fruit. It is brown in colour and highly visible.

- The flesh
The flesh is the most important part! Musang King has a thick, golden-yellow flesh that is sweet with a hint of bitterness. It has a custard-like texture and is really creamy.
