Yesterday (1 October), Klang experienced a severe afternoon thunderstorm with strong winds. According to New Straits Times, the incident began at 2pm.
Residents in Port Klang described the storm as a small tornado that tore off the roof of several apartments, uprooted trees, damaged some cars, and caused a power outage in Port Klang.
The storm also affected some areas around Subang Jaya, including Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang, causing flash floods. According to Astro Radio Traffic, there was a one-hour delay from the Skypark roundabout to the Federal Highway.
The floods were so bad that even parts of Sunway Pyramid’s underground parking were affected! You can see how bad it was in the viral video posted at about 4.28pm yesterday.
Malaysian Meterological Department clarified that the phenomenon was not a tornado as there was no structure visible. They confirmed that the strong winds were caused by a severe thunderstorm.
Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported from the storm yesterday, but since we’ll be expecting rainy weather and possible floods for the next month, don’t forget your umbrellas and stay safe, everyone!
