Getting surgery can be incredibly scary for some, and for good reason.
Though most surgeries are relatively safe, the fear that something, anything could go wrong, will definitely linger on an individual’s mind and for one woman, the nightmare became a reality when doctors discovered a pair of scissors in her abdomen that had been left behind from a previous surgery.

After having a tummy tuck operation in Turkey, Nurcihan Ogmen, from the province of Aydin in the south-west of Turkey, found herself suffering from incredible pain.
According to local news outlet A Haber, the surgeon – identified by the initials L.A., had removed excess skin on Nurcihan’s abdomen in an operation that lasted almost five hours at a private hospital in Kusadasi, before she was discharged the following day.
However, the 61-year-old soon noticed a swelling developing on her stomach and went back to the medic when the severe pain hit.
The mother-of-seven was initially told that by the surgeon that the pain was normal and that it would pass, but the pain persisted.

Despite almost weekly visits, Nurcihan was constantly told by the doctor that she just had to be patient and deal with the pain.
After her symptoms continued for two months, Nurcihan and her husband Kubdettin Ogmen decided to get it checked out at the Soke State Hospital.
Shockingly, an x-ray of the woman’s abdomen showed that there was a pair of scissors left in her by the irresponsible surgeon.

“After the operation, my pain got worse,” Nurcihan said. “It became so severe that I went to check-ups almost every week. The doctor did not believe me and sent me away saying that I just need to be patient.”
“Each time he dismissed me, he was not interested in listening to me at all. I could not explain the incredible pain I was in to him.”
“I still feel the pain,” she added. “I’m still not fully recovered.”

After the shocking discovery in her abdomen, the woman returned to the surgeon who removed the scissors during a two-hour operation.
Nurcihan has filed an official complaint to the local authorities against the surgeon as well as the hospital administration and other medical personnel involved in the operation.

You’d think that leaving surgical equipment in someone during an operation only happens on the big screen… Clearly, it can happen in real life too.
One lesson we’ll take from Nurcihan’s case is to always get a second opinion if the first one seems sketchy. Thankfully, they were able to find the problem before something worse happened.
