Two women from China were hospitalised after performing 1,000 squats and suffering a near-fatal condition.
19-year-old Tang had challenged her friend via video call to do as many squats as possible to see who had the better stamina between them.
The fun physical activity while challenging, resulted in the girls performing around 1,000 squats each. Tang noted that her legs felt sore after the challenge but didn’t let it stop her from going to work the next day, thinking that it was just a case of post-workout soreness.

On the third day after the challenge however, Tang discovered that she couldn’t bend her legs and that her muscles were painfully sore. Things took a more serious turn when she realised that her urine had turned a tea-colour.
This was definitely a sign that something was not right.
Tang then asked her boyfriend to take her to the hospital as she suspected that something was wrong with her kidneys.
At the hospital the couple discovered that Tang was suffering from a condition called “rhabdomyolysis.” WebMD describes the condition as a “serious syndrome due to a direct or indirect muscle injury. It results from the death of muscle fibers and release of their contents into the bloodstream. This can lead to serious complications such as renal (kidney) failure.”

If not properly treated, rhabdomyolysis could be fatal.
Fortunately for the 19-year-old, she was treated immediately and has since recovered in the hospital’s eICU (Electronic Intensive Care Unit).
According to the deputy director of the endocrinology and nephrology department, Tang’s young age may have played a big part in her recovery process as it help her recover more rapidly.
Should this have happened to someone much older, the condition could escalate and become fatal due to kidney failure.
While recovering, Tang decided to check up on her friend who had also performed around 1,000 squats. Turns out that she too had been hospitalised for the same condition.
