Sometimes when your nails grow too long, it can get really annoying.

But one woman has never had a problem with that, not for the past 30 years.

Well… Until now.

Ayanna Williams from Houston, Texas, USA, was given a Guinness World Record in 2017 for the longest fingernails on a pair of (female) hands.

Then, her fingernails measured in at an incredible 18ft (5.5m) for the record but she didn’t stop growing them.

However, after dedicating 28 years of her life to growing her nails, Ayanna decided to bid them goodbye.

Before the record-holder had her precious nails cut off however, the doctors measured her fingernails a final time and found that she had broken her previous 2017 record with its new length of 24ft 0.7in (733.55cm).

This is the first time Ayanna has cut her fingernails since the early 90s but as sad as she is to say goodbye, she’s ready for new adventures.

“I’ve been growing my nails for a few decades now,” she said. “I’m so, so ready for a new life. I know I’m going to miss them, but it’s just about that time – it’s time for them to go.”

Though she has always been proud of her record-holding fingernails, day-to-day activities like washing the dishes and putting sheets on the bed, has become difficult for Ayanna.

“With my movements I have to be very, very careful,” she said. “So usually in my mind I’m already preparing for the next step that I have to do to make sure that I don’t hurt myself with my nails – or break them.”

“I’m excited about cutting my nails because I’m looking forward to new beginnings,” she shared.

Ayanna’s long fingernails will now be preserved and on display at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum in Orlando, Florida, USA.

“It’s gonna be awesome,” she said. “It’s going to be like a wax of myself even though it’s just my nails.”

“I can’t wait to see that, for real. I’m going to be grinning from ear to ear. Just really think about it, it’s amazing.”

So what’s next for Ayanna? Well, she plans to grow her nails again but perhaps not to record-breaking lengths…

“With or without my nails, I will still be the queen,” she said. “My nails don’t make me, I make my nails!”

We hope Ayanna will be able to happily enjoy her new adventures with her shorter nails!

What’s the longest you’ve kept your nails before? Let us know!
