Having an active lifestyle should be the norm for everyone. From working out in the gym to hiking in the wild, you totally deserve to enjoy sweating without any worries.

However, some people aren’t as blessed with ‘perfect’ skin, and their conditions can cause lots of pain and sometimes self-esteem problems.

But, there’s hope.

These Malaysian men shared personal stories about their skin issues with us, and how they didn’t let it ruin their lifestyle

#1 Eczema from all the sweat

Growing up, Larry didn’t understand what eczema really was, but he knew that whenever he got really sweaty from playing sports, he got huge red patches that really itched.

“They would become so red, kinda swollen and take a long time to heal. I never thought much about it until I got older and realised that it was this skin problem called eczema,” he said.

However, he really loved playing sports anyway and checked online for some remedies. He soon found out that specialised body wash for sensitive skin helped improve his condition!

#2 Super dry skin that kids made fun of

As an English and P.E teacher, Thomas has to face school kids every day and well… they can be pretty brutal with their jokes sometimes.

He explained, “I have darker skin so when my skin is dry, it can look really ashy and grey, so the students sometimes call me really mean things like ‘the dead’, a skeleton, Mr Ghost, etc. Ouch.”

“About a year ago, a friend of mine shared that I should try body lotions that are made specifically for very dry skin. Now, I don’t look ashy anymore and the teasing has mostly stopped.”

#3 Dandruff that made him stop wearing dark clothes

“I am a super outdoorsy person,” Fitri shared. “I like going to the beach, camping, swimming, and travelling outside in general. And I also love wearing black outfits.”

“But because I’m always under the sun, I started getting dandruff and normal dandruff shampoos didn’t really help.”

Fitri said that though he tried lots of remedies, they didn’t help… until he finally found a fast-acting scalp care product that stops his flaky scalp and regained confidence in wearing dark clothes!

#4 EVERYTHING hurts due to psoriasis

When Erman was younger, he used to play lots of sports and had an active lifestyle. However, at around 17 years old, he developed a painful skin condition called psoriasis that made him look red all the time.

“It was due to extreme stress. I was enjoying my co-curriculum activities a bit too much and my studies were getting bad, so I felt pressured to perform better and suddenly my skin just started peeling, bleeding or hurting.”

Though he has learned to overcome stress, his psoriasis remains and only ultra-gentle, soothing body wash and long soaks in the bath can help him feel better.

#5 Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants to cover skin peeling

Abhi enjoys hiking, cycling and outdoor activities in general. However, all that sun exposure sometimes causes dryness, which leads to his skin tearing and peeling.

“I work in a corporate office, but we’re not required to wear formal attire. Usually just smart casual or semi-formal clothes are ok, but because my skin looks so messed up, I always wear shirts with long sleeves and slacks to cover up.”

Abhi says that his superiors sometimes make fun of him too by calling him ‘boss’, but that doesn’t stop him from continuing his outdoor adventures.
