Many things have changed with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’ve had to adapt to many new normals including working and studying from home.

University and college students, expect to stay home until the end of the year.

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) recently announced that all university lectures are to be conducted purely online, with no face-to-face lessons allowed, until 31st December.

The MOHE however have made a few exemptions for five academic categories involving students.

Postgraduate research students in private and public institutions will be allowed to return to campuses, but this is only for students who are required to be on campus or have need of special equipment.

Out of the five, this category is the only category of students who are allowed to be back on campus immediately.

The other four categories of students will have to wait until the conditional movement control order (CMCO) is lifted, before returning to campuses.

These four categories include:

  • Final semester/year certificate, diploma and degree students who need to conduct clinical and practical work or require special equipment (as early as 1st July)
  • Final semester/year students without a conducive environment or access to equipment for online classes (as early as 1st July)
  • Special-needs students in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes in polytechnics and community colleges who require face-to-face guidance due to learning difficulties (as early as 1st August)
  • The new intake of certificate, diploma and degree students for the 2020/2021 academic season in all public and private universities, polytechnics, and community colleges

  • Admission for certificate and diploma students in polytechnics and community colleges, as early as July 1, 2020.
  • Admission for foundation, certificate, diploma and Bachelor’s Degree students at Private Institutes of Higher Learning (IPTS) as early as July 1, 2020.
  • Admission for foundation and diploma students in public universities, as early as August 1, 2020.
  • Admission for undergraduate and postgraduate students for the research mode at public universities and IPTS, as early as October 1, 2020.

University students, do take note and talk to your lecturers if you’re not sure which category you belong to!

Share this with other university students you know too!

In the meantime, be sure to keep playing your part by staying safe and staying home, and only going out if it’s absolutely necessary. And if you’re going out, be sure to practice social distancing.
