When it comes to food, us Malaysians are ready to defend it to death. Make no mistake, we’ve had our fair share of fights with our neighbouring countries over many different food claims.
But this time, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Indonesians and more have come together to ask one simple question to an American media company. That question is a big “HUH??”

Recently, Food Insider showcased one of Indonesia’s famous dishes, Nasi Goreng, on one of their food-travel videos.
We know it and you know it, Nasi Goreng IS fried rice. Even a direct translation will tell you that Nasi Goreng = Fried Rice.

But according to Food Insider, Nasi Goreng is a dish that “resembles” fried rice and is in fact, not fried rice. We kid you not.
UMMMM.
In the video’s caption, Food Insider wrote:
“Resembling fried rice, nasi goreng is made with a thick, sweet Indonesian soy sauce called kecap.”
This of course has sparked confusion amongst many Southeast Asian countries, because as we all know, Nasi Goreng IS fried rice and does not simply resemble it.
SMH.
Well, mistakes do happen… but maybe asking around would have helped cleared up the confusion right, Food Insider? (Or a Google Translate…*shrug*)
Hopefully a confusion like this doesn’t happen again because us Southeast Asians are ready to protect our food at any cost.
