It’s only been three weeks since Apple featured a Malaysian photographer’s photo on their official Instagram page, and now...for the second time this month, the company has once again featured another picture taken by a Malaysian!
The tech giant recently featured an image of a tortoise swimming in a lake taken by 27-year-old photographer Amsyar Naaif Shahmaruddin with the photo captioned “Interesting photos are happening everywhere you turn”.
The photo has now reached over 160,000 likes with over 400 comments, mostly from other Instagram users congratulating him for the feature...and Malaysians being super proud of Amsyar’s achievement.
According to Amsyar, the photo was taken at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur and he initially posted the photo on his personal Instagram account back in October last year, which was captioned “Kura kura Titiwangsa”.
His stunning picture was one of the lucky ones that attracted Apple’s attention thanks to the hashtag he included in the caption: #ShotOniPhone
“I was at the lake area with my wife when this tortoise popped up, I quickly decided to take a photo. Everything sort of happened really fast and when I looked again, the tortoise was gone,” he said.
Overwhelmed with everyone’s kindness, Amsyar said he is very thankful for being featured and appreciates the kind words he has received from fellow Malaysians who commented on his photo.
“They were all very supportive and said they feel proud to see a fellow Malaysian being recognised by an international company,” he said.
According to Amsyar, he has been trying to get featured on the company’s Instagram page ever since it was set up in 2017. And now his dream has come true!

“I had older phone models like iPhone 5s and 7 where I’ve been posting images with the hashtag #ShotOniPhone. It’s nice to finally get the feature because of the exposure that comes with it. As a photographer, this feature will be a nice addition to my portfolio,” he said.
On Jan 1, Apple kicked off the new year with a picture of a lone figure at a pier taken by Malaysian student Ling Hou Wah. The 17-year-old student shared that the photo was taken at Kepong Metropolitan Park.
Aside from Ling, other groups of Malaysians have also had their pictures featured on Apple’s Instagram page. These include policeman Azmeer Iskandar with his Terengganu beach photo, student Dinie Aiman Sukhaizar’s image of a paddy field in Perlis and Muhammad Faris Danial Mohd Faizal’s picture of sunset at Sabak Bernam.
FYI… There is no official selection criteria for users to get their images featured on Apple’s Instagram page. All you have to do is tag your photos with the hashtag #ShotOniPhone. So, it’s time to grab your cameras and show off your awesome photography skills. Who knows, you could be the next Malaysian featured on Apple’s Instagram! You know what they say...don’t just dream of greatness. Chase it!
We are so happy once again to see a Malaysian featured by the brand and we’re super proud to have these super talented Malaysian photographers. Malaysia boleh!
