2020 is coming to an end and many people are saying nothing surprises them anymore after so many disastrous events, but November has got another surprise in the form of a Burj Khalifa-sized asteroid.
The asteroid named 153201 2000 WO107 has been confirmed to be colliding with earth’s orbit on 29 November 2020.
NASA estimated that the asteroid is approaching at the speed of 25.07km/s or 90,124kmph will hurl past earth tomorrow.
The massive asteroid as big as the world tallest building will pass by the earth at the distance of 4,302,775 km from earth and while it will not be visible to the eye, people with a small telescopes might be able to catch it.
Astronomers are taking the opportunity to study the asteroid that’s 800m high with a diameter of 500m as it approaches its closest point from the earth this Sunday.
Classified as a Near Earth Object (NEO), the asteroid was interestingly discovered on the same day 20 years ago on 29 November 2000.
Although it was termed “potentially hazardous”, NASA said that a civilisation-threatening risk from a space object is extremely rare and only happens once every few million years.
So if you’re picturing a world ending meteor crash scenario in your head, you can shake it off because it’s not happening in 2020 (and hopefully ever).
