A live-action version of the animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, has been confirmed for some time now and the cast of the main characters has finally been revealed!
Aang, Katara, Sooka and Zuko will be played by Gordon Cormier (The Stand), Kiawentiio (Beans), Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why), and Dallas Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings) as Zuko respectively.
The live-action adaption was first announced in 2018, with fans previously saddened by the news that the creators will unfortunately be stepping away from the series over creative differences last year.
“I realised I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded,” DiMartino wrote at the time.
“Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good... but what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”
Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow, Nikita) will serve as showrunner and executive-producer alongside Dan Lin (The LEGO Movie, Aladdin), Lindsey Liberatore (Walker) and Michael Goi (Swamp Thing).
Michael Goi, Jabbar Raisani (Lost in Space), and Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the Cloud) will direct the series and Roseanne will also serve as a co-executive producer.
"We’ll be expanding and growing the world, and there will be surprises for existing fans and those new to the tale," Albert Kim explained following M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 live-action film adaptation. "But throughout this process, our byword has been 'authenticity.' To the story. To the characters. To the cultural influences.
“Authenticity is what keeps us going, both in front of the camera and behind it, which is why we’ve assembled a team unlike any seen before — a group of talented and passionate artists who are working around the clock to bring this rich and incredibly beautiful world to life."
While many fans are upset about the original show creators not joining the project, they are excited about their new studio under Nickelodeon Animation called Avatar Studios which is confirmed to be making an animated film and other projects.
The original show synopsis reads, “In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfil his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world. The world is divided into four elemental nations: The Northern and Southern Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads.”
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Though there is no official release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series yet, it’s definitely exciting to see how it will turn out!
