Asians are no strangers to cooking rice and we all have our own methods when it comes to measuring rice and more! But one cooking show's host’s rice cooking method has enraged the Asian community!
An old BBC Food video that was posted back in 2019 recently came under fire after it featured the unusual way the host cooked rice.
The video hosted by Hersha Patel teaches people how to cook fried rice and in the video, the host makes her first mistake by putting unwashed rice into a pot with water and boiling it.
“A lot of people get afraid of cooking rice, but you can follow a really simple rule, which is for every one part rice, you need two part water. It’s as simple as that,” she said. “It honestly does work every time.”
As the rice starts to simmer, she drains the rice with a strainer before the rice can absorb the water and be fully cooked, and then proceeds to rinse the rice with tap water!!
“Drain it, the rice has quite a lot of starch in it, which will make it a bit gloopy when you’re stir frying it. So, rinse it, and now just keep the rice nice and light and fluffy.”
The recipe called “Hersha’s Easiest Ever Egg Fried Rice” went viral after Malaysian stand-up comedian Nigel Ng, who's based in UK, made a reaction video on it.
Nigel reacted to the video as his persona Uncle Roger and commented on many other things that got him shocked and confused.
“Wait, so you don’t wash the rice? How you don’t wash the rice just cook the rice?” he said. “Why are you running water through?”
“You’re ruining the rice. First, you use colander to drain the rice and then you put water then why bother drying the rice? Who cooks rice like this?”
He also expressed his frustration towards the end of the video when Hersha used a metal spoon to scrap the pan saying, “this is non-stick sauce pan cannot use metal” before letting out a loud sigh.
Many Asians on the internet are angry at the way the host cooked the fried rice, with a number of comments on the original video pointing out how the way is wrong and the rice is still uncooked.
