A new wave of COVID-19 outbreak has been confirmed in Beijing after more than 106 tested positive for the virus.

All primary and secondary schools have been shut and online classes will be carried out from home for students.  “High risk” areas have gone into lockdown as the city alert was raised from level three to level two.

The event was classified as “extremely severe” by the government and researchers revealed that the new virus outbreak is largely linked to the huge Xinfadi wholesale food market where the virus is said to have originated in Europe.

More than 30 communities are in lockdown and residents near the market are banned from leaving the city with disinfection operations to be carried out in all markets, restaurants, canteen and offices.

It was reported that traces of COVID-19 have been found on the chopping boars  used to cut imported salmon in the Xinfadi market.

“A cluster like this is a concern and it needs to be investigated and controlled - and that is exactly what the Chinese authorities are doing,” said Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization emergencies director.

A total of 252 active cases have been recorded in China as the country goes through the economy recovery.

New Zealand also broke its 24-day virus-free streak recently after two new cases was recorded in the country.

With the past experiences on handling the spread of COVID-19, hopefully the nations can once again bring the new outbreak to an end as soon as possible.
