Before he found love with Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco got serious about what he wanted in a relationship—and he literally made a list.
The music producer, who got engaged to Gomez in December 2024, opened up about his journey to love during a joint appearance with the singer on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. He revealed that he sat down with his therapist and wrote out “all the things I want” in a future partner—long before he and Gomez got together.
“Before I met her, I was just another guy in L.A. trying to find the right person,” Blanco said. “I think I was maybe looking in all the wrong places.”
He shared that eventually, he realized he was ready to grow up, settle down, and find someone to truly build a life with. “I want to start a life, I want to have a family, I want someone who feels like my other half. I want it to be a real give-and-take, that perfect yin and yang.”
When host Jay Shetty asked what was on the list, Blanco said the very first thing he wrote was that she had to be “age appropriate”—meaning “30-plus” for him. Next? “Someone who is kind, compassionate, and caring,” he said. “That’s really three things, but I just wanted someone who’s genuinely nice.”
Selena, who has been open about their love since they went public in late 2023, echoed his sentiment. She recently told The Hollywood Reporter it’s the “safest I’ve ever felt” in a relationship. And in a separate Interview magazine chat, she explained how being single for five years helped her be ready for something real.
“That time alone helped me appreciate someone like Ben,” she said. “He gets so weirded out when I say this, but honestly, 10 years ago I couldn’t have accepted the kind of unconditional love and patience he gives me now.”
The couple is currently promoting their joint album I Said I Love You First—and it sounds like they’re more in sync than ever.
