It appears that silat was one of the many martial arts used to train the lead actors in Black Panther!

The fighting styles for two of the main lead actors in the film, Chadwick Boseman, who plays King T’Challal and Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Nakia, were influenced by silat.

In May 2017, Chadwick posted a video of him training for the role on his Instagram. He appeared to be practicing moves similar to silat.

According to Chadwick, the choreography of the fighting scenes was created from martial art styles from different continents. “A lot of thought went into the choreography, which incorporates capoeira (Brazil), Dambe boxing (West Africa), Senegalese wrestling, Zulu stick-fighting and mixtures of Asian styles like muay thai and harimau silat, to create the fictional heritage of Wakanda,” he said.

Silat Harimau is one out of many silat styles and is said to resemble the movements of tigers – with its low stance and use of leaps and kicks. Fitting for a cat-based character like the Black Panther!
