It’s becoming increasingly common to see people selling food or snacks at traffic light stops but if you’re planning to buy from them, you might want to reconsider!
Buying from a traffic light junction seller is a punishable offence and will not only get the seller fined, but buyers can also receive a fine of RM2,000.
“Police have identified a total of 52 locations that have become the focus of business activities at traffic lights throughout Johor through Ops Kesedaran,” said Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
"According to the provisions of the law, not only can sellers be prosecuted but also buyers for which they can be fined not more than RM2,000," he said.
He added that traders are especially advised to look for other sale methods that are not only safer but in accordance with the provisions of national law.
"My advice, look for other methods or locations that are more suitable to run a business and are not dangerous," he said.
The locations identified include the Angsana Johor Bahru Mall traffic lights, Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang traffic lights, Taman Cempaka traffic lights and Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi traffic lights.
Sellers at traffic light junctions are getting more popular not only in Johor but also in the Klang Valley.
Among the most seen traffic light junction sellers are mango asam boi and drinks sellers.
Malaysians have mixed reactions to the news, with many agreeing that it’s dangerous and some of them sharing how they have also accidentally hit the sellers before while some say the fine should be implemented for the seller’s employers instead of them.
