Many of us can’t bear to lose our jobs because of the commitments that we have to pay every month and unfortunately for this man, it’s money for his critically ill son’s treatment.
A man working in Suzhou, China was dismissed by his company for going home overnight to visit his critically ill son after the hospital called saying his son is not breathing and is being treated in the ICU.
The man had asked his superior for a request to take leave on a Saturday but unfortunately, he could only talk to the boss on Monday. The company later said that the leave can’t be approved and asked him to leave the company.
The company used the “three-day absence without approved leave” clause in the contract as the reason behind dismissing the employee.
The employee mentioned that he signed an agreement with the company that he would go back and take care of his son while maintaining a labour relationship, but the agreement has since been changed in October last year.
“Due to that the company no longer abide by the agreement and asked me to leave the company,” the employee said. “But I can't lose my job, I have to earn money to save my kid.”
The boss said that he’s just following the company’s protocol and he doesn’t have the power to make decisions on matters related to the employee’s contract.
He said that the employee named Mr. Zhang has worked for the company for 13 years and his three-year-old son was diagnosed with brain stem glioma in August last year.
He has been asking for leave since September last year and only returned to work in February this year.
The boss said that the company is asking him to leave the company and settle his son’s situation and the company will welcome him back once he’s ready to return.
In response to Mr. Zhang’s situation, some lawyers suggested that he should apply for a labour arbitration and legal aid can be provided for labour arbitration cases.
The incident has since gone viral on the internet with mixed reactions from the netizens, with many sympathizing with the employee and think the company’s action are unfair while others say the company had to fire him because he was absent from work for too long.
