It’s been seven years since Crazy Rich Asians hit theaters and became a global sensation, but fans are still waiting for a sequel. While a spin-off TV series is in development with writer Adele Lim at the helm, updates on the second movie have been few and far between—until now.

Henry Golding recently told E! News that things are finally moving. Lim visited him and Gemma Chan in London to talk about their characters, signaling that the creative wheels are turning again. Meanwhile, director Jon M. Chu has emphasized that he won’t move forward with a sequel unless it’s truly worth it. “The bar is too high,” he told Deadline, adding that the story needs to match or surpass the quality of the first film.
One major reason for the delay was a reported pay dispute in 2019 that led to Lim stepping away from the project. Chu later confirmed they tried to reach a fair deal, but too much time had passed. Lim’s return for the TV show, however, suggests the team has reconciled and is back on the same page creatively.

The cast’s busy schedules have also been a factor. Michelle Yeoh went on to win an Oscar, and Chu directed In the Heights and Wicked. Author Kevin Kwan noted in 2024 that everyone’s success meant taking a step back—but now the timing feels right to return.
While no official release date for the sequel has been announced, the cast and creators agree: rushing the follow-up isn’t the answer. As Yeoh put it, “When you have such a big success, the pressure is, ‘How do I make it better?’” The team wants to get it right—and fans just might be rewarded for their patience.
