A television adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is officially in the works, with director Jon M. Chu and co-writer Adele Lim returning to expand the beloved story beyond the big screen.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the 2025 Academy Awards, Chu revealed that a Crazy Rich Asians series is in development at Max, based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novels. The filmmaker explained that the shift to television allows for a deeper dive into the world and characters introduced in the 2018 film.
“We needed more real estate, that was the reality,” Chu shared. “The TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters in a way that just a movie wasn’t doing.”

While a sequel to the blockbuster rom-com has been delayed for years, Chu hinted that the idea isn’t entirely off the table. “I don’t know if it’s in lieu of a sequel, but it felt clear that every character we wanted to explore needed more room,” he said. “So we’re starting this now—it’s going to be fun.”
Lim, who co-wrote the original film with Peter Chiarelli, will serve as showrunner for the series. She previously exited the planned sequel in 2019 over pay disparity concerns but is now returning to help bring the TV adaptation to life. Chu will executive produce alongside Kwan, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson.

The Crazy Rich Asians film starred Constance Wu as Rachel, a New Yorker who discovers that her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) is part of one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. The all-star cast included Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong, Ronny Chieng, Chris Pang, Harry Shum Jr., and Nico Santos.
With the TV series, fans can expect an even deeper exploration of the opulent world and dynamic relationships that made the original movie a cultural phenomenon.
