Celine Song, the filmmaker behind Past Lives, returns with another compelling love triangle in A24’s upcoming film Materialists.

The film follows Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a skilled matchmaker in New York who has successfully paired nine couples—but struggles when it comes to her own love life. Torn between a charming, wealthy bachelor (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect yet familiar ex (Chris Evans), Lucy finds herself at a romantic crossroads.
"You are what we call a unicorn, an impossible fantasy," Lucy tells Pascal’s character in the newly released trailer. Meanwhile, glimpses of Chris Evans’ character suggest lingering emotions and unresolved connections, leaving Lucy questioning her own matchmaking abilities.

Song wrote and directed Materialists, set to hit theaters on June 13. The film is produced by Song’s Past Lives collaborators David Hinojosa, Christine Vachon, and Pamela Koffler, with an original song by indie band Japanese Breakfast.
While Materialists shares a love triangle theme with Past Lives, producer Christine Vachon assures fans that this film has a distinct feel: “She’s the kind of filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice.”
