Mulan has been the only Asian Disney princess so far but a new Southeast-Asian princess is finally here!
Disney just revealed their first South-east Asian princess, Raya, in the new Raya and the Last Dragon trailer with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star Kelly Marie Tran voicing the character!
The movie was written by Qui Nguyen and Malaysian screenwriter Adele Lim and it’s set in a fantasy land named Kumandra that’s inspired by Southeast Asian cultures from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos.
“Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity,” the synopsis reads.
“Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.”
Raya and the Last Dragon was first announced at the D23 Expo and Cassie Steele was previously announced to voice the character Raya before it was revealed that Kelly Marie Tran had replaced her instead.
Crazy Rich Asian star Awkwafina will also be voicing the character Sisu, a water dragon who can transform into a human being and is the last of her kind.
Former SMK (P) Sri Aman graduate Adele Lim (that previously wrote for Crazy Rich Asians), shared her excitement on Instagram showing the first look image at the movie!
Fans have been eager to see some Southeast-Asian elements in a movie that will be kept visually authentic by Thai storyboard artist, Fawn Veerasunthorn and the trailer looks amazing!
Raya and the Last Dragon is set to release in March 2021.
