Disney’s latest live-action remake, Snow White, had a sluggish start at the domestic box office, debuting with $43 million in ticket sales. While its global earnings of $87.3 million, the film’s $250 million budget looms large.

Despite the underwhelming numbers, Disney remains optimistic. Many of its live-action adaptations, such as The Little Mermaid (2023), initially faced similar challenges before gaining momentum over time. That film, which opened to $95 million domestically, eventually grossed nearly $570 million worldwide.
While Snow White struggled to meet expectations, the box office saw an unexpected shake-up. The action-comedy Novocaine overtook Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 to claim the top spot. Meanwhile, Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animated epic that dominated for eight consecutive weeks, was finally dethroned, though it still added $15 million to its already staggering $2.1 billion total.
Robert De Niro’s mob drama Alto Knights, directed by Barry Levinson, had a disappointing debut, earning just $3.1 million on a $45 million budget. Even worse was Magazine Dreams, the bodybuilding biopic starring Jonathan Majors, which opened to a mere $700,000. The film, once positioned as an awards contender, suffered following Majors’ legal troubles and conviction for assault and harassment.
Whether Snow White can turn things around in the coming weeks remains to be seen.
