“Here lies Dobby, a free elf” – carved in stone and in our memories… but maybe not for long...
One of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter universe, Dobby the House Elf has had many memorable moments since we first met him in Chamber of Secrets… and even his tragic death caught us all in despair and resonated until the very end of the books and films.
However, we are facing a possibility of seeing the removal of his iconic gravestone soon!

In the books, Dobby was buried near Shell Cottage but in reality, the burial was filmed above Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, UK, and since the release of the film, fans have created a grave of their own as a memorial to the belovede elf.
The area is marked with a large number of rocks and pebbles left by fans – many bearing the same words as his original gravestone while others simply read “RIP Dobby.” Others have left socks in reference to Dobby being set free.

However, the National Trust Wales is now asking people whether the grave should be removed due to ‘additional pressure on the environment and facilities’ caused by the increasing number of visitors at the site.
Fortunately, this is not an immediate action as the National Trust is hosting a survey to get respondents to share their thoughts on whether the grave should be removed, and on whether it should be transferred to a ‘suitable publicly accessible location off-site’.
The responses have definitely been in complete favour of our favourite house elf’s memorial to remain but there have also been suggestions to regulate visitors’ offerings to keep Dobby’s burial site whilst maintaining the natural beauty of the beach.

What do you think about this survey? Should they remove Dobby’s gravestone or leave the fan-made legacy for future Potterheads? Let us know in the comments down below!
