The king of fruits might smell amazing for most Malaysians but some foreigners think it’s really smelly! So smelly that they needed to make an emergency aircraft landing!

Recently, pilots from a Canadian airline smelled a strong scent from the cabin at 7,000ft up in the air and couldn’t get rid of the foul smell so they had to turn the plane around!

The second highest level of emergency called Pan Pan was declared by the pilots and they had to wear oxygen masks while they returned to Vancouver, 37 minutes after departure.

Pan Pan is used for serious but non-life-threatening emergencies and none of the 245 passengers and eight crews members were hurt during the incident.

And the foul smell that forced the emergency landing came from none other than Malaysia's favourite, durian!

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) revealed that the smell came from a shipment of durian that was stored in the forward cargo hold of the plane forcing the flight to Montreal to turn back to Vancouver.

The aircraft only returned to service 20 hours after they offloaded the durians.

Many foreigners can’t stand durian’s smell and named it the world’s smelliest fruit, likening it to the smell of rotting onions, turpentine, and even raw sewage.

The smell of durian previously caused emergency evacuations twice for being mistaken as gas leaks in Australia, once in RMIT University and another in the University of Canberra.
