We’ve seen our fair share of… unique combos but 40-year-old hawker Derrick Ng in Singapore is definitely topping the list with his interesting combination of fish soup and durian which he sells for S$12 (RM37) per bowl.
Derrick has been cooking a standard batang fish soup and selling a bowl for S$6 (RM18.53), since 2012.
In 2020 however, the hawker decided to experiment with durian in his soup.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, he shared that he began experimenting with the flavours after some customers told him that eating more durian could enhance an individual’s health.
With further research, Derrick found that the king of fruit is nutrient-dense and contains a lot of fibre which is definitely beneficial.
So, he decided to come up with the unique durian fish soup in his hawker stall in Tampines, Singapore.
Derrick explained to 8days that for the seasonal dish, the durian flesh is first shredded and then added to the fish broth.
He also shared that the durian he uses is organically grown and obtained from Bao Sheng Durian Farm, a Malaysian family-run business that focuses on “biodynamic, organic farming”.
And what about the taste of the unusual concoction?
Unsurprisingly, the Singaporean hawker has gotten a lot of mixed reviews. Some love it and some would rather pass on the dish.
Food blogger Angela Chng previously noted that the dish was actually “quite tasty”.
“I tried it out of curiosity, and surprisingly, the durian taste is actually not so strong and blends well with the peppery soup.”

Though the durian fish soup may be getting mixed reactions, it hasn’t stopped Derrick from being sold out almost every day!
Even though we love the king of fruits, we’re still not sure if we’d give this combination a try…
