If you’ve been thinking about getting a re-usable, metal straw but never seemed to actually get one, you might want to get one as soon as you can.
The Selangor government is moving in the right direction when it comes to saving the planet by implanting a ban of plastic straws in all eateries beginning 1st July.
The plastic straw ban aims to eliminate the rising threat of single-use plastics, which pollute the seas, and endanger marine life.

According to State Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment committee chairman, Hee Loy Sian, the state of Selangor will prohibit eateries from habitually providing customers with single-use plastic drinking straws.
“We will instruct all eateries, be they restaurants or neighbourhood coffeeshops to stop providing plastic straws with every drink,” he said. “They must also not put straws on tables for customers to take freely. But the eatery is allowed to give a plastic straw to a customer upon request.”
The committee chairman noted that the state is taking a tough stance in protecting the environment.
“Our aim is to change people’s habit of using plastic drinking straws,” he said. “We hope that before they get up from their seat to ask for a straw, they will think about the litter and destruction caused by these straws to marine life.”
“Outlets found ignoring the ban and continuing to automatically give straws with drinks after July 1 will be issued a gentle reminder by the respective local councils,” Hee added.
The plastic straw ban will be fully enforced throughout Malaysia by next year.
