Elizabeth Olsen says she won’t be returning as Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars—but Marvel’s history of secrecy has fans questioning if that’s really true.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen confirmed she won’t be in London for the upcoming Avengers shoots, stating, “No, I’m back [in the States]. I just finished Panic Carefully and am moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].”
Olsen has portrayed Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in six MCU films, debuting in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and last appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), where her character seemingly sacrificed herself. Despite her statement, Marvel’s history suggests fans shouldn’t take her words at face value.
Actors denying their involvement in Marvel films is nothing new. The Acolyte star Dafne Keen initially denied appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, only for Disney and Marvel to reveal her return as X-23 just before the movie’s release. Andrew Garfield similarly denied his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home until the film premiered.

Speculation about the Avengers cast has been rampant. Benedict Cumberbatch backtracked on claims he wouldn’t return as Doctor Strange, and while reports hinted at Chris Evans’ return, the actor himself denied it, saying he is “happily retired.” One confirmed return, however, is Robert Downey Jr., who will star as Doomsday’s villain, Victor von Doom.
With Avengers: Doomsday set for release on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars following in 2027, only time will tell if Olsen’s denial is genuine—or another classic Marvel misdirection.
