After nearly a decade of Demogorgons, psychic battles, and Hawkins-based horrors, Stranger Things will reach its epic conclusion this fall and winter. Season 5 promises to be the biggest yet, with eight movie-sized episodes dropping across three major release dates.

Netflix recently unveiled the first official footage during its Tudum event on May 31, confirming long-speculated details and igniting fan anticipation for what the Duffer Brothers are calling their most ambitious season.
Here’s everything we know so far about the final installment of Stranger Things:
Release Schedule: When Does Season 5 Premiere?
Season 5 will be released in three parts:
- Volume 1: November 26
- Volume 2: December 25 (Merry Christmas!)
- Finale: December 31 — a New Year’s Eve sendoff
All episodes will be available on Netflix.
Where We Left Off in Season 4
Season 4 ended with Hawkins under siege. Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), now revealed as the mastermind of the Upside Down, opened multiple rifts throughout the town. While Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) managed to confront him in the psychic realm, the damage was done.
Max (Sadie Sink) was briefly killed by Vecna, triggering the fourth rift. Though Eleven revived her, Max was left in a coma — her mind empty when Eleven tried to reach her.
Elsewhere, Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Murray (Brett Gelman) escaped from a Russian prison and returned home. Will (Noah Schnapp), still psychically linked to the Upside Down, ominously sensed that Vecna was still alive and recovering.
What Is Season 5 About?
Set in the fall of 1987, the story picks up more than a year after the destruction of Hawkins began.
“Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown.”
The military has quarantined the town and resumed its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s original disappearance approaches, so does a new wave of dread. The final battle is coming — one that promises to be darker and more dangerous than anything the gang has faced before.

Sadie Sink will return as Max despite her coma at the end of Season 4. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed she has a significant role in the final chapter.
And though Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) died in Season 4, fans shouldn’t rule out a cameo or flashback — especially given Quinn’s coy responses in interviews.
Not returning? Argyle, the pizza-loving stoner sidekick, played by Eduardo Franco. The actor confirmed he wasn't contacted for the final season.
The Duffer Brothers describe Season 5 as “big, epic, and intense from beginning to end.” They’ve teased over 650 hours of raw footage and say the final season will feel familiar — a return to the tone and structure of Season 1, but on a massive scale.
“This season is going to pay off the characters you’ve loved for nearly a decade,” said Harbour. “The final battle is going to be worth the wait.”
You can watch Stranger Things exclusively on Netflix. All four seasons are currently available to stream, and the fifth and final season is set to premiere on the platform once it’s released.
